At Phoenix P-12 Community College we understand that some students need extra assistance to feel safe at school and connected to their community, and we are therefore very excited to be launching the Nurture Program on the Redan Campus. Through the Nurture Program, students who find the transition from home to school a little daunting are given the opportunity to spend time in the Nurture Room each morning and ‘ready’ themselves for the school day. The individual or small group structure creates an environment where the key focus is student social and emotional growth, as well as oral language skill development and communication of needs.
The Nurture UK model has been successfully running overseas and in Australia for over 40 years, with children who engage in Nurture programs showing significant improvements in the areas of emotional regulation, classroom behaviour, peer relationships and academic achievement. The Nurture Room offers an opportunity for children to experience early nurturing engagement, giving them the skills to do well at school, make friends and deal more confidently and calmly with the trials and tribulations of life, for life.
As we grow and develop this program, the room will be open to more students in varying year levels.
